Beat the Competition! Using Library Resources to Land Your Dream Job or Internship: Finding NAICS Codes

Think our databases are just for research papers? Think again! Beat the job-market competition by using our databases to research your prospective employers.

Industry Codes

When researching markets within a particular industry, having the corresponding NAICs code(s) can be very helpful.  To locate the NAICs code for your industry of interest, see the link below.

Step 1. Identify your business/organization's area.

Scenario: Let's say you're interviewing for a sales position at a specialty, organic goat-cheese company. Locating the NAICS code for your industry will help to identify industry specific-information that will demonstrate to your interviewer that you've done your homework and have the knowledge to identify and exploit sales opportunties in this area.

Step 2. Access the 2012 U.S. NAICS manual.

Step 3. Determine the sector under which your prospective employer/intern host falls. (Browse the heirarchy or download the NAICs index in Excel & perform a keyword search.)

Step 4. Browse the subheadings to locate the industry under which your prospective employer/intern host falls.

Step 5. View and record your industry code. This information can be used to conduct database searches.
