TOPIC: For the Dept. of Justice, research what monetary and other costs the extremely high level of incarcerated population in the US have for our society.  Or what are the economic and social costs to society of the for-profit prison system?

TOPIC: For your genetic engineering company, research the legal, ethical, and health problems or advantages of human cloning, choosing the genes of our children, or genetic alteration of farm crops.

TOPIC: How is climate change affecting the spread of disease (whether fungal, bacterial, viral, or borne by parasites and insects)?  What will be the economic costs to the United States of such epidemics as Zika?  What techniques can be used to prevent or disrupt the spread of several related or one particular disease, such as dengue fever or Zika?

TOPIC: Design a "green" building for a client with particular requirements for location and use.

TOPIC: Plan a waste disposal system for your business or community that maximizes the amount of material which is recycled or composted and minimizes the amount sent to landfills or incinerators. Or research how communities in other countries use farm-produced methane or heat from incinerated waste to produce hot water.

TOPIC: For a planning agency, research the likely effects of global warming on the local, national, or international environment.  For instance, what physical and economic effects will rising water or hurricanes have on NYC and Long Island in terms of transportation, tourism, or other businesses?

TOPIC: What are the dangers of concussion, such as long-term brain damage, to athletes in contact sports?  Should more protections be introduced for children playing sports?  Can new equipment or training procedures mitigate the problem?

TOPIC: What are the physical dangers of using cell phones over the long term, especially for those who start to use them at a young age? Research the most recent studies, especially those suggesting the current US standards for safety are flawed.

TOPIC: For your restaurant, research the health advantages of one of the new diets, such as paleo, and suggest appropriate changes to the menu.  Or, for a U. S. government agency, research one of the new diets from the medical perspective.  What health advantages does it really have?

TOPIC: Find out the dangers of past Facebook postings/photos/profiles (sins of youth!) being discovered by security firms hired to investigate you for a job or advanced degree application (since none of the information on Facebook belongs to you and may legally be sold to anyone).  And, for an employment firm, create a list of do’s and don’ts for teenagers using Facebook, and their parents. Or create a handbook detailing employees’ proper social media usage and limitations for a small or large corporation.
