For Your Health and Wellness

From reading for leisure, to listening and watching, to taking a break, health and wellness resources from the NYIT Libraries.

Ideas for Taking Breaks

Research shows that taking purposeful study breaks (anywhere from 5–60 minutes) to refresh your brain and body increases your energy, productivity, and ability to focus.

  • Move your body. Stretch. Take a walk. Take a shower. Organize your workspace.
  • Speak with someone. Phone a family member or friend.
  • Turn off your screen. Step outside and reconnect with nature. Central Park is a few steps away! Take a nature walk on the Old Westbury campus.
  • Stop concentrating. Listen to music. Dance.
  • Take a 15 to 20-minute power nap. ”Alexa/Siri, wake me up in 15 minutes!”
  • Eat a healthy snack. Drink water. Cook.
  • Shift your attention. Allow yourself to daydream.
  • Practice gentle, relaxing, deep breathing.
  • Laugh!
