Computer Science & Engineering: Core Journals & Magazines

Introduction to basic tools and search strategies covering a wide range of resources and services in these fields

How are Top or Core Journal Titles Determined?

Each year Journal Citation Reports (JCR) from the company Thomson Reuters examines the influence and impact of scholarly research journals.  By using three measures of citation analysis, JCR attempts to offer a systematic and objective means of journal evaluation.  Over 7,000 scholarly and technical journals in all fields may be compared.

Impact Factor is the average number of times articles from a journal published in the past two years have been cited in the JCR year.  Publishers and article contributors value these results as prestige boosters.

Eigenfactor Score considers the number of times articles from a journal published in the last five years have been cited in the JCR year while also considering which journals have contributed these citations.

Article Influence Score formula determines the average influence of a journal's articles over the first five years after publication.

IEEE Journals

In terms of journal impact and quality the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the dominant publisher.  Using recent JCR listings, IEEE claims to publish 18 of the top 20 journals in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, 9 of the top 10 journals in Telecommunications, 7 of the top 10 journals in Computer Hardware & Architecture, 8 of the top 20 journals in Information Systems, 8 of top 20 journals in Software Engineering and high-ranking journals in several other technology fields.

Magazines

All You Can Read.com is an excellent source for identifying major popular & trade magazines.  The "Computer" section offers 16 subject categories, while the "Science and Technology" section covers areas such as aerospace, aviation, electronics, environmental, gadgets, robot, science, space and technology.  "Top 10" lists include "Computer" and "Science".

Top Engineering Magazines - This site links to 12 high quality academic publications in engineering and science offering publishing opportunites for undergraduate students.
