What's Copyright and Fair Use? This LibGuide is designed to help the students, faculty and staff understand the difference between fair use and copyright infringement. It offers simplified tables, videos, and even a quiz to test one's copyright knowledge.

Introduction

This guide provides basic information regarding "Copyright Law" and "Fair Use" to the students, faculty and staff at NYIT. Here you will find tables, videos, quizzes, and links to help you understand the basics of copyright law, copyright infringement, and fair use of materials for both academic and personal use. 

What is Copyright?

"Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law (U.S. Copyright Office)."  It gives credit to the creator(s) of the original work and allows them to hold ownership of the original work. 


7 types of work are protected by copyright:

  1. Literary works

  2. Dramatic (including accompanying music)

  3. Musical (including accompanying lyrics)

  4. Artistic (pictorial, graphic, and sculptural)

  5. Audiovisual (movies)

  6. Pantomimes and choreographic 

  7. Sound recordings 

The reproduction, modification, distribution, and/or public performance of the above mentioned works without the consent of the owner is prohibited by law, subject to legal penalty, and may face a heavy monetary fine and/or incarceration. (Title 17 of the United States Code)
