Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why should I use the NYPL for my FCWR-161 research?

You are required to use three book sources for your research paper. The NYPL has a world class book collection that you should take advantage of. No matter what topic you are researching, the NYPL will likely have books on that topic.

Are international students eligible for a NYPL library card?

Any person who lives, works, or attends school or pays property taxes in New York Stat is eligible to receive a NYPL Library card free of charge. For more information, click on the "How to get a Library Card" quick link.

How do I check if the NYPL has books on my research topic?

Use the NYPL book catalog to see which branches or research centers have books on your topic. Next, check whether it is a book you can check out or not. If the record says "USE IN LIBRARY" under "Message," that means it is a Reference book that you cannot take out of the library. If the record does not say "USE IN LIBRARY," it is a circulating book you can check out to take home. See picture below.

If a book is circulating, you can place a hold on it and have it sent to any of the 88 branch libraries for pickup.
