The LGBTQIA+ community has many terms and phrases, and "LGBTQIA+" and "queer" are just two that have been used to refer to the community in recent years.
Each letter in "LGBTQIA+" represents a different identity within the community, while "queer" is a reclaimed word used as an umbrella term for the community. It is up to preference which term one uses and it is common to see both terms used interchangeably; for example, in literature, studies on LGBTQIA+ themes, authors, or stories are often called "queer theory," while the community at large is often referred to as "the LGBTQIA+ community."
The Human Rights Campaign has a helpful Glossary of Terms to help navigate terms as they emerge, but here is a quick breakdown of the LGBTQIA+ acronym:
L = Lesbian
G = Gay
B = Bisexual
T = Transgender
Q = Queer/Questioning
I = Intersex
A = Asexual, Aromantic, Agender
+ = Indicates creation of new terms & identities
