Evidence-Based Practice

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) states that:

Evidence-based practice is a problem-solving approach to clinical decision-making that incorporates a search for the best and latest evidence, clinical expertise and assessment, and patient preferences and values, within a context of caring.

To deliver the best care to patients, it is advised to integrate clinical expertise and current evidence with the preferences of patients and their families. When reviewing evidence, it's important to ask yourself questions like:

  • Whose perspectives were chosen to be included?
  • Who created the evidence?
  • How was that evidence created?
  • What questions remain unanswered?
  • What harm may be created?
