Governor to White House to Nobel Prize

 THE NORTH ROOM

At the end of the Spanish-American War, Colonal Roosevelt was elected governor of New York.  He then ran on the Republican ticket for vice president with William McKinley and, upon the assassination of President McKinley, was sworn in as President in 1901.  He pushed the Republican Party toward Progressivism with ideas such as "Trust Busting", the "Square Deal", and government regulation of business.  He subsequently won his second term in office.  He was responsible for the completion of the Panama Canal and the U.S. display of naval strength with the Great White Fleet.  In addition, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating an end to the Russo-Japanese War, becoming the first American to win this prestigious award.

After his second term ended, he formed the "Bull Moose" party in an attempt to win another term as President, but he lost the election to Woodrow Wilson.
