From Badlands to Politics to San Juan Hill

Re-entry into politics...then the army...

In 1888, President Harrison appointed Rosevelt to the U.S. Civil Service Commission. In 1895, he became the New York City Police Commissioner.  Then, in 1897, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy, where he became a national figure.  However, in 1898, at the start of the Spanish-American War, he resigned from the Navy, and, as an Army Colonel, combined volunteers from out west and New York to form the First U.S. Calvalry Regiment known as the Rough Riders.  Pictured above are these famous Rough Riders after capturing San Juan Hill, Cuba.
