Tips & Tricks

  • Captured sensitive data (e.g. student ID #s) in your screenshot? Hide it with the black highlighter or an empty text box before saving.
  • Can't avoid capturing sensitive data in your video? Before recording, use Sticky Notes in Windows or Stickies in Mac to cover up private info. 
  • NYIT email can't handle large files; if you're going to share a video, downloading to screencast.com might be your best option.

Need an easy way to create, annotate, and share screenshots? Wish you could create brief video tutorials for your colleagues or students? Jing, a free screencasting tool from TechSmith, can help! By the end of this session, you'll be able to download and install Jing on your laptop; capture, annotate, save, and share a screenshot; and capture, save, and share a screencast. Please bring your personal laptop for a hands-on experience. Ideas for use in your office include: show student workers how to fill out their timesheets, pay their bills, access course materials, and more. If using an NYIT-issued device, please visit https://www.techsmith.com/jing and download Jing prior to attending the session; assistance from Service Central may be necessary. 
 
9:30am-9:40am: Welcome; Install Jing
  1. If you have not already installed Jing on your device, please go to https://www.techsmith.com/jing and download Jing. 
  2. Getting to know the Jing interface.
    • Moving the Jing Ball
    • The Capture, History, and More nodes.  
9:40am-9:50am: How to capture, annotate, save, and share a screenshot. 
  1. Navigate to http://www.nyit.edu/
  2. Hover over the Jing ball. 
  3. Click the CAPTURE icon. 
  4. Move the cursor to the upper most corner of the area you would like to capture. Click and hold the left side of the mouse. Drag until you have highlighted the entire area you would like to capture and let go of mouse. 
  5. Click the IMAGE icon at the bottom of the capture area. 
  6. Use the arrow, text box, frame, and highlight annotation tools as necessary. 
  7. Choose your preferred method of saving the screenshot. Either save to Screencast.com or your computer. 
9:50am-10:00am: Participants will capture, annotate, and save a screenshot. 
  • Your turn!
    • Choose a page on the NYIT website.
    • Capture a screenshot and annotate the page using your tool bar. 
    • Save the screenshot to your desktop OR to screencast.com. 
10:00am-10:10am: How to capture, save, and share a screencast. 
  1. Navigate to http://www.nyit.edu/ 
  2. Hover over the Jing ball. 
  3. Click the CAPTURE icon. 
  4. Move the cursor to the upper most corner of the area you would like to capture. Click and hold the left side of the mouse. Drag until you have highlighted the entire area you would like to capture and let go of mouse. 
  5. Click the VIDEO icon at the bottom of the capture area.
  6. Record your video and press STOP when finished.
  7. Choose your preferred method of saving the screenshot. Either save to Screencast.com or your computer. 

10:10am-10:20am: Participants will capture, save, and share a screencast.

  • Your turn
    • Choose a page on the NYIT website. 
    • Capture a video showing your colleagues and/or students how to do something on that page. 
    • Save the video to your desktop OR to screencast.com. 

10:20am-10:30am: Final Questions?
