Drive pedals increase the signal to the amplifier, pushing the valve, or vacuum tube past it's normal linear region of operation. Remember the video on Tone and how frequencies work? Well, as one of the first effects that helped shape the possibilities of electric guitar, drive pedals boosted the signal so high that it exceeded and distorted the normal range of amplitude. Thus, giving birth to early rock n roll songs such as "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones and "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix.
We're going to run through the family of drive pedals, specifically Overdrive, Distortion and Fuzz.
One of the tried and true distortion pedals, the RAT is one of the most iconic guitar pedals. Manufactured by Pro Co, it came into existence in the 1970s and was popularized in the 80's. If you listened to Metallica or Weezer, you've heard this pedal.
It's also very affordable. Reverb.com usually has them for $70.
Josh Scott does an incredible job walking us through the history of Distortion. A must watch for music lovers and musicians alike.
