North Dakota Badlands

After graduating from Harvard, spurred on by his interest in naval history, Roosevelt published The Naval War of 1812, establishing his reputation as an historian. (He was later to become Assistant Secretary of the Navy.) His interest in politics landed him a seat as a New York State Assemblyman, and as a Republican activist, he became a leading player in state politics.  Disappointed by party politics, and having suffered the loss of his first wife, Alice, he ventured out west to the Dakotas, known at that time as the Badlands. There, he built a ranch, living the western life of riding, roping. hunting and exploring.
