Creating Effective Links to eBooks & Chapters

This guide provides faculty with a simple, step-by-step process for creating links to textbooks, articles, and other library resources that ensure seamless student access. Learn how to use the correct URL prefix and avoid common linking issues.

Why Use the Library Prefix?

When faculty link directly to articles, eBooks, or other resources from library databases, those links often work only on campus or during the same browser session. Without the correct prefix, students may encounter error messages or be asked to pay for access, even though the library already provides it.

The library prefix ensure that the link routes through the library's system, prompting students to log in with their NYIT credentials via Okta Verify. This allows them to access the full text from anywhere, on or off campus.

What Is a Prefix Link?

A prefix link is a regular web link (URL) with a specific beginning added to it, called a prefix, that tells the browser to go through the library's system first. This helps verify that the person clicking the link is allowed to access the resource, like a textbook or an article.

Think of it like a key to a locked door:

  • 🔒 Without the prefix, the door stays locked (students may see a paywall)
  • 🔑 With the prefix, the door opens (students are recognized as part of the institution and gain access)

Here's what it looks like:

  • Without prefix:
  • With prefix:
