Core Elements of an MLA Works-cited Reference

Rules to Remember

  • Place a period (.) after Author, Title of Source, and Location. If you do not have a location for your citation, place the period after the last element in your citation.
  • Place a comma (,) after Title of Container, Other Contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication Date, Location. 
  • Title of Source appears within quotations, e.g., "Title of Source."
  • Title of Container is italicized, e.g., Title of Container.
