Welcome to the Library Guide to Codes & Standards in the Built Environment

In the context of design and construction, recognized the distinct definitions of code and standard:

Codes building code or safety code, provides regulations, rules, and guidelines by a recognized authority or government agency and define minimum requirements for design, construction, maintenance, and use of buildings or facilities. Codes are legally enforceable, meaning that compliance with them is mandatory, and failure to adhere to the code may result in penalties or restrictions.

Building codes, usually based on health and safety standards, are local, state, or national regulations that control the design, materials, and practices used in construction. Most building codes include regulations on structural soundness; fire prevention and escape; and plumbing, mechanical, heating, and electrical systems.

Standard: Developed and maintained by a recognized standard-setting organization. Standards are voluntary guidelines that establish a consistent and accepted approach to processes, products, services, or systems. While standards compliance is not required, this indicates quality, safety, and best practices.
