Architecture & Design: Standards

Subject Guide and Course Reading Lists

ADA

The ADA Standards for Accessible Design say what is required for a building or facility to be physically accessible to people with disabilities.

ASHRAE

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is the governing society responsible for developing building design as well as energy efficiency standards and guidelines for the new construction environment.

ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)

Founded in 1898, ASTM produces standards for materials, products, systems, and services, promoting quality, safety, and reliability across diverse industries worldwide.

This essential engineering collection contains over 29,000 papers -- all of them peer reviewed! All symposia papers are published in book format (known as STPs or Selected Technical Papers).

IEEE

Established in 1884, IEEE sets standards for electrical and electronic technologies, from communication systems and computer hardware to power generation and distribution.

Request Standards

Can't find what you're looking for? Request books and articles through Interlibrary Loan. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is available to all current students, staff, and faculty at NYIT. To avoid delays, always check the Library Catalog to see if we own the item prior to submitting ILL requests. For more information, see our FAQs or call any NYIT Campus Library.

ANSI Accessing Standards

ANSI offers standards for a variety of fields as a representative for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which publicizes standards that ANSI regulates. Patrons can access ISO standards by purchasing a subscription from ANSI. Members of ANSI subscriptions can purchase access to the standards at a lower price.

However, educators can gain access to certain ISO standards for free using the ANSI University Outreach program. ANSI's goal is to ensure that international standards are understood and upheld in the US, and as a part of that mission, ANSI makes the ISO standards accessible to university students and educators at no cost. Instructors must apply to the program by contacting the ANSI University Outreach representative at lrajchel@ansi.org and filling out the ANSI Enrollment Form below. Once the form has been received, ANSI will reach out to the applying instructor with further steps. Upon completion, instructors will then be able to distribute the standards to their classroom and will submit an evaluation of the program at the end of the term.

LEED

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the world's most widely used green building rating system. LEED certification provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings, which offer environmental, social and governance benefits. LEED v5 is the newest version of LEED.

Living Building Challenge

The Living Building Challenge (LBC) is a comprehensive sustainability standard for buildings, aiming to go beyond simply "doing less harm" by creating structures that are actively restorative to the environment, integrating elements like on-site renewable energy, water capture and treatment, highly responsible material selection, and a focus on occupant health and well-being, all while considering the local ecosystem and community impact

WELL

The WELL Building Standard is a performance-based system that measures and certifies how buildings impact human health and well-being
